10 February 2007 Michigan Tech Winter Carnival Torch Light Parade down Mt Ripley & Fireworks. The Sons of Norway, Ulseth Lodge members have reserved a room on the campus of MTU to view the parade and fireworks from the warmth of the Chemical Sciences Building. We will meet and socialize starting at 7:30pm Saturday in second floor room 208, the Chemistry Learning Center. Bring a Norwegian desert snack or cheese/crackers etc and watch this spectacular event!

Feb 22, 2007 The National Sons of Norway co-sponsor the Barnebirkie, a race for over 1,300 children during the famous annual Brikebeiner cross country ski race in nearby Hayward/Cable, Wisconsin as a tribute to the original Birkebeiner ski marathon  to save the infant future King of Norway in 1206. Our Ulseth Lodge sent cookies to give to the children as they finished the race. Local members, Richard & Nancy Imm volunteered at the race and delivered our cookies. They brought back medals and gifts for those of us who sent cookies:

3 March 2007 Ski-In & pot luck Chili Dinner at the Maasto Hiihto ski trail in Hancock. Meet at the Trail Head Chalet at 3pm Saturday to ski or snowshoe the Maasto Hiihto Trail.  If you do not ski, meet us at the Chalet near the Houghton County Arena about 5 with dinner to start at 6pm. Watch the total eclipse of the moon beginning at sunset/moonrise. Bring either chili, bread, cheese, drinks, salad or desert. Contact Eileen for more info.

Thursday 10 May at 6pm & Saturday 12 May at 11 am at Finlandia's FAHC in Hancock: Norwegian/Swedish comedy-drama Award winning 2003 movie made in Norway called Kitchen Stories  a movie about a post war Swedish social research: "... the Home Research Institute sent out eighteen observers to a rural district of Norway to map out the kitchen routines of single men. The researchers were on twenty-four-hour call, and sat in special strategically placed chairs in each kitchen. Furthermore, under no circumstances were the researchers to be spoken to, or included in the kitchen activities... Throughout the film, Isak speaks Norwegian and Folke speaks Swedish..." This funny, moving story has won 8 awards. The movie is sponsored by Finlandia University as part of their year long Nordic Series movies (mostly Finnish movies).

Thursday, 17 May 2007  Syttende Mai Celebration. Luncheon 11:30-2 pm at Finlandia's Portage Campus, 200 Michigan Str, Hancock. Norwegian food prep by Daily Grind Cafe. Famous Author & Rosemaling expert, Pat Virch & her husband Niron, will provide the featured Norwegian demonstration! They will be dressed in their Norwegian Bunads and will also have some of the Rosemaling books Pat has written to sell and autograph and some of her rosemaled art pieces to sell.  They also will bring the door they Rosemaled in 2006 and pictures of their art work over the years.

23 June 2007 Longest Day Fest at McLean Park. Come and watch the Sun go down on the longest day of the year! Norwegian Fish Boil, Pot Luck and Bon Fire! please contact the webmaster if you have pictures of this fun event!

23 June 2007 Scandinavian Festival, Presque Isle, Marquette 10am till 10pm Vendors, Food, Entertainment.
(Next year, Ulseth Lodge can plan to attend this as a group and have a Sons of Norway booth!)

18 August 2007 Heritage Days in Calumet. Norwegian Waffle Bake and Fundraiser Saturday morning for the Norwegian Lutheran Church. Volunteers are needed to help with this community event! Contact Susan Rokicki337-3731

September 2007 Parade of Nations through Hancock to Houghton with ethnic entertainment & food to follow. The Tech Norwegian students walked in the parade with the Norwegian Flag last year, lets join them this year!

Saturday, November 3, 7:00pm Meeting and a Program:  We will have a talk by MTU Visiting Scholar, Vidar Gynnild, from Trondheim, Norway, about Immigration, Culture and Integration; issues of immigration to Norway with a view to the country's migration history. Vidar's Master's Degree was in History, related to the migration history of Norway in the 1800s. He will have slides of Norway including the Røros copper mining district South of Trondheim, which like our Keweenaw National Heritage Park, is a mining district preserved as a park. The mine shut down in the 1970s; now Røros is listed in the UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites based on it's copper mining heritage. We will have a short meeting prior to the talk to elect offices from a presented slate. Please bring a plate of snacks to share.
